OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Dec. 1, 2016 is World AIDS day. It's a condition that continues to affect countless people both throughout the world and right here in Michigan.

In fact, as of May 2016, 17,660 people were living with HIV in Michigan and 77% of those infected were males, and 23% were females, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

35 years after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention first recognized HIV, the precursor to AIDS, as a condition, a cure still remains elusive. However, HIV is thankfully no longer a death sentence. The medical community is continuing to make huge breakthroughs and with treatment, many HIV sufferers have the same life expectancy as people without HIV. However, early detection and thus early treatment is crucial.
