Patrick Mikes' Son Faces Prison in Baseball Bat Beating Death of Father

Attorneys for Patrick Mikes, a 21-year-old from Troy accused in the baseball bat beating death of his father last summer, reached a plea deal this week to avoid trial.

Mikes faces 12 to 20 years faces 12 to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty, but mentally ill, to second-degree murder in the death of his father, Patrick Joseph Mikes.

Mikes, a former Notre Dame University student, is to be sentenced Sept. 10 by Oakland County Circuit Judge James Alexander, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press. The report continues that as part of the plea deal, Mikes will receive some mental health care in prison.

Mikes had disappeared in July 2012 and his son initially told police his father had gone on a bike ride and hadn't returned to his Troy home. Investigators discovered blood in the basement and located the father's body on Aug. 10 in a cornfield in Genesee County. Police said there had been no history of violence between the two men previously.

Mikes, who remains in Oakland County Jail, was initially charged with open murder and faced up to life in prison. He was scheduled to go to trial in October.
