Who says adults can't have fun in the summer?

The Troy Public Library's Adult Information Services Technology Center recently received a brand-new microfilm-microfiche reader/printer, made possible through a gift of the Friends of the Troy Public Library.

According to a news release, this updated technology allows users to select individual articles or photos from vintage newspapers, in order to search for obituaries, headlines, or anything else in the library's collection of vintage newspapers. The library owns the full-image edition of The New York Times from September 1851 through 2006 and The Detroit News from 1975-2010.

From there, users can refine the images, save them to a single page, and print, email, or save them to a portable storage device. The 24-inch monitor makes viewing easy, and the Windows-based software is familiar and user-friendly.

More summer fun for adults at the library

  • The library's Adult Summer Reading Program runs until Aug. 8 (register online at troylibrary.info if you haven’t joined yet) and features weekly prizes of $25 gift cards at The Somerset Collection as well as a grand prize of a Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi and case. For ideas about what to read, check out the Bookletters book lists, pick up a copy of BookPage from the "New Books" shelves in Adult Services, or stop by the Adult Information Services desk.
  • PBS-featured author and lifelong Michigan resident Doc Fletcher presents his hour-long canoeing and kayaking program, "Paddle Now, Chores Later" on Tuesday, July 30, at 6:30 p.m. The program will also focus on the impact on and recovery of the Two Hearted River from a historically-large wildfire in May and June 2012. Register online or call (248) 524-3542 to reserve your spot for this popular program.

The library is located at 510 W. Big Beaver Rd.
