Car Crash and Fire in Troy Kills 2
Updated: a semi tractor trailer caught fire after jack-knifing and trapping a car traveling northbound I-75 early Monday morning.
Update: 8:07 p.m. with additional information from the Troy Police Department
Two people trapped in their car after colliding with a semi tractor trailer in Troy died early Monday morning.
The crash happened at 12:10 a.m. on northbound I-75, just north of Rochester Road, according to a Troy Fire Department press release. There, a 40-foot semi had caught fire after colliding with the passenger vehicle containing the two people.Â
Troy Police investigators made a tentative identification of the deceased and notified their families, but positive identification will be made by the Oakland County Medical Examiners Office, according to an update on Monday afternoon.
The driver of the semi escaped uninjured, but the two people trapped as a result of the crash did not survive.
The semi, from Art Van Furniture, was loaded with furniture and the tractor's fuel tank(s) ruptured, leaking burning diesel fuel which took firefighters several hours to extinguish with several hose lines of foam as the northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for six-and-a-half hours.
The car, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, had been seen by witnesses travelling in the right lane at a slow rate of speed with its four-way flashers on, but not the headlights. Police said that the truck jack-knifed, trapping the Pontiac partly under the semi.

The incident remains under investigation and any other witnesses are asked to contact the Troy Police Department at (248) 524-3477.  Â
