Troy Teachers, District Agree On New Contract

The Troy School District and teachers have agreed on a new contract that will cover 2.5 years and give newer teachers step increases.

TROY, MI β€” The new school year will start without a hitch after Troy teachers and the Troy School District recently agreed on a new 2 Β½-year contract. The agreement will allow teachers at the lower end of the district’s 14-step schedule to receive pay increases while veteran teachers will not. Unlike past contracts, teachers at the higher end of the scale will also not receive bonuses to offset the lack of step increases.

β€œThis cut was done in part to make sure that step increases could be paid for the lower-paid teachers that are newer to the profession or district,” said Jordan Harris, assistant superintendent for employee services.
β€œThe interest-based bargaining process is a collaborative, cooperative process that doesn’t pit sides against each other,” said Tony Lucchi, president of the TEA. He said that approximately 70 percent of the teachers in the Troy School District are on the lower wage scale.
