Week in Review: City Budget Woes; Tim Gunn Visits; Granite City Brewery to Open Soon

• Government: . Unless major changes are made, the city could face takeover by an emergency manager in five years, says City Manager John Szerlag. . Culpepper will take over for current City Manager John Szerlag and will serve until a long-term replacement is found.
• Pet of the Week: . Julio is available for adoption at Paws for Life Rescue in Troy.
• Mother's Day: . Mother's Day is just over a week away, but if you're thinking of treating mom or grandma to a special brunch, you might want to make your reservations sooner rather than later. . • Cinco de Mayo: . Students make paper hats to help celebrate the Mexican holiday.. 'Avocados are a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and vitamin B6,' Beaumont dietitian Silvia Veri said.
• New Businesses: . The family-friendly upscale casual restaurant is scheduled to open to the public on Tuesday. . The pregnancy and childbirth wellness center offers support, education and services to women throughout pregnancy and beyond.
• Sports: . The Red Hawks win 4-3 and 3-1 in two key Oakland Activities Association White games on Wednesday. .
• Schools: . Schools across the Troy School District participated Friday in the nationwide "Stand 4 Change" event, which encourages students to stand up against bullying. . The new online assessment will replace the MEAP and MME tests in math, reading and writing beginning during the 2014-15 school year.. Duda has worked in the district for more than a decade and served as assistant principal of Athens High School for the past five years.
• Arts: . The school's Symphonic Band has also been invited to perform in an additional Festival of Gold Concert next school year.
