Week in Review: City Budget Woes; Tim Gunn Visits; Granite City Brewery to Open Soon

Here's a recap of the past week's news in Troy.

A lot happened last week and we want to make sure you didn't miss a thing, so here are some of the highlights:

  • Event: . Gunn showed off the Spring 2012 collection from Juicy Couture, Kate Spade New York and Lucky Brand jeans while sharing fashion tips with attendees Saturday afternoon. Also, check out his exclusive interview with Troy Patch where Gunn .
  • Government: . Unless major changes are made, the city could face takeover by an emergency manager in five years, says City Manager John Szerlag. . Culpepper will take over for current City Manager John Szerlag and will serve until a long-term replacement is found.
  • Pet of the Week: . Julio is available for adoption at Paws for Life Rescue in Troy.
  • Mother's Day: . Mother's Day is just over a week away, but if you're thinking of treating mom or grandma to a special brunch, you might want to make your reservations sooner rather than later. . We want to see your photos and read your stories of mom, grandma, foster mother or other significant mother figure in your life. You might win her a nice prize!
  • Cinco de Mayo: . Students make paper hats to help celebrate the Mexican holiday.. 'Avocados are a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and vitamin B6,' Beaumont dietitian Silvia Veri said.
  • New Businesses: . The family-friendly upscale casual restaurant is scheduled to open to the public on Tuesday. . The pregnancy and childbirth wellness center offers support, education and services to women throughout pregnancy and beyond.
  • Sports: . The Red Hawks win 4-3 and 3-1 in two key Oakland Activities Association White games on Wednesday. .
  • Schools: . Schools across the Troy School District participated Friday in the nationwide "Stand 4 Change" event, which encourages students to stand up against bullying. . The new online assessment will replace the MEAP and MME tests in math, reading and writing beginning during the 2014-15 school year.. Duda has worked in the district for more than a decade and served as assistant principal of Athens High School for the past five years.
  • Arts: . The school's Symphonic Band has also been invited to perform in an additional Festival of Gold Concert next school year.
  • House & Home: . Putting your home on the market? A local realtor shares selling tips on how to get that purchase agreement signed quickly.
  • Patch Drives: . "I didn't see it coming, but I fell hard for the oh-so-polarizing crossover," columnist Angela Youngblood reports.
  • Police News: . Arraignment waived for the 18-year-old who was arrested in downtown Birmingham April 13 after he was caught carrying a loaded rifle. . This week's event recognizes the contributions members of school safety patrols and service squads make to the Troy community.
