Event Brings Dream Cruise to West Bloomfield Seniors

The owners of more than 60 classic and antique vehicles volunteer to bring smiles to the faces of Jewish seniors.

Residents of Jewish Senior Life Foundation's West Bloomfield campus at Maple and Drake clapped and cheered Tuesday afternoon, as a steady parade of classic cars rolled through during their annual Senior Dream Cruise.

Lea Trager had a ringside seat as the scaled down version of the Woodward Dream Cruise headed past two assisted living apartment buildings.

"This is so much fun," she said. "They're all great. The community supports us, and it's fabulous."

Foundation director Carol Rosenberg said the event started six years ago, after a program director who attended the Woodward Dream Cruise suggested bringing classic cars to the campus.

"We started with 20 cars, and now we have 67," she said. "These are community people who give back."

One of this year's returning Senior Cruisers was Ken Walters, aka Kenny the Car Guy, who owns Mufflers and More auto repair shop in Walled Lake. He brought his 2001 Pontiac Trans Am convertible.

"The thing I like is seeing the looks on people's faces," he said. "It takes them back to where they were in the past."

"Bringing smiles to faces, hands down," is why Brian Veit of the Michigan Mopar Muscle Car club brought his 1967 Dodge Charger.

"You'll never find a more appreciative audience," he said.
