West Bloomfield Libraries Host 75th Birthday Celebration Sunday

The West Bloomfield Township Public Library celebrates 75 years of service on Saturday, with activities at the Main Library and the Westacres branch. 

Held from 12 p.m.-4 p.m., Main Library activities include an “All Aboard” storytime and trackless train rides, Curious George meet-and-greet with crafts, cider and donuts, potato sack races and horse-drawn wagon rides (weather permitting). Vintage autos will be on display, and vocalist Mary Rademacher entertains beginning at 1 p.m.

At Westacres, a favorite children’s book character will welcome visitors at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The library will also offer refreshments, along with balloon and sticker giveaways.

According to an article written by library board president Ken Macon, Keego-Cass Women's Club members in 1934 went door to door picking up books and money to start a library in their clubhouse. Around the same time, Westacres Book Club members established a library in their subdivision clubhouse.

In 1937, Keego-Cass club members lobbied for a publicly funded library, and the following year, residents approved a .25 levy to create West Bloomfield Township Public Library. The township took over the Westacres library in 1940, Macon wrote.
