1 Dead, 1 Hurt In 5-Car Crash On I-75 In Oakland County: Police

Police said traffic on the freeway was at a standstill because of road work when the crash happened.

INDEPENDECE TOWNSHIP, MI β€” A 67-year-old man is dead and another person was injured in a five-car crash on Interstate 75 in Oakland County on Tuesday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.

The crash happened at 12:05 p.m. on southbound Interstate 75 near Sashabaw Road in Independence Township, according to police.

Police said traffic on the freeway near Sashabaw Road was at a standstill due to road crews working in the left two lanes, which were blocked off.

A 65-year-old Flint man was driving a charter bus in the right lane and was unable to stop before smashing into a red Chevrolet Silverado, according to police.

The crash caused a chain reaction, as the Silverado smashed into a Mercedes Benz GL450, which then hit a Ford F750. The utility truck was then pushed into a silver Chevrolet Silverado, according to police.

The bus continued and struck the side of a semi-truck parked on the right shoulder, according to police.

The driver of the red pickup truck, a 67-year-old man from Goodrich, was killed in the crash, according to police.

The driver of the Mercedes was taken to a nearby hospital with a lower-body injury, according to police.

There were no other injuries in the crash, according to police.

The freeway was closed for the investigation, which included the use of a drone for mapping the large scene, according to police.

The freeway has since reopened.

Police were still investigating the crash and will turn over their findings to the prosecutor's office for potential charges.

"When driving it is very important to leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one in front of you," Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw. "This includes when waiting in stopped traffic to prevent large chain reaction crashes."
