$65,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds Approved

The White Lake Township Board approved the allocation of federal community development block grant (CDBG) funds for 2013 at Tuesday's meeting.

Community development block grants are part of a federal program run by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program, according to HUD, provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs.

For 2013, $50,000 will be allocated to the township's minor home repair program that is designed to help low- to moderate-income households in White Lake Township complete more complicated home maintenance. In order to qualify for the program, you must be a resident of the township and meet income specifications.

Supervisor Greg Baroni said that since 2002 the program has helped 153 families with a variety of projects including replacing septic tanks, wells, roofs, hot water heaters and furnaces.

The rest of the money, $15,547, was allocated to public service. In the past, the public service designation has applied to groups like HAVEN, a local group that works to bring awareness about domestic violence and sexual abuse - they also help survivors of assaults and domestic violence.
