It will be the first movie theater in the Metro Detroit area with an an IMAX screen and comfy recliners.

SOUTHGATE, MI — A downriver movie theater is getting a massive upgrade sometime this fall.

MJR Southgate Cinema announced Tuesday it's partnering with IMAX for a new state-of-the-art auditorium, which will include a new IMAX screen and comfy recliners, making it the first-of-its-kind in the Detroit area.

The new IMAX screen will use a "groundbreaking" 4K laser projection system that delivers brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast and the widest range of colors exclusively to IMAX screens. It will also use an immersive precision audio system.

"Our partnership with IMAX is the next step in our evolution to continuously providing our guests the ultimate movie experience," MJR Vice President of Operations Joel Kincaid said. "While IMAX has been expanding across the globe it’s been well over a decade since an IMAX has opened in Metro-Detroit. MJR is proud to bring IMAX to our downriver communities and provide the only IMAX fitted with Recliners in Metro Detroit."

There are six IMAX theaters in the metro Detroit area, most of which that are owned by the Midwest chain AMC Theatres. MJR says it plans to open more IMAX locations in the future.
