11 Inches Of Snow Possible In Grand Marais: MN Weather

Heavy snowfall is expected tonight into Friday for far northeast Minnesota, particularly in Cook and northern Lake counties.

DULUTH, MN — Heavy snowfall is expected tonight into Friday for far northeast Minnesota, particularly in Cook and northern Lake counties, including Grand Marais. The tip of the Arrowhead is forecast to receive 4 to 9 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts of up to 11 inches possible, according to the National Weather Service.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday evening until noon Friday for these areas. The rest of the Northland will see lighter snowfall amounts.

The snow will be wet and heavy, and gusty northwest winds could cause drifting and blowing snow on Friday.

Snowfall is expected to begin along the US/Canada border between 8 and 10 p.m., spreading to the North Shore between 10 PM and midnight, and moving farther southeast after midnight.

"Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning commute," the NWS said. "If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Call 511."

Tonight: A chance of flurries before 10pm, then snow, mainly after 10pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 22. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

Friday: Snow likely before 9am, then snow likely, possibly mixed with rain between 9am and 10am, then snow likely after 10am. Patchy blowing snow between 11am and 2pm. Cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 32 by 9am, then falling to around 21 during the remainder of the day. Breezy, with a north wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
