2025 Minnesota Senate District 29 Special Election Guide
Voters in Wright, Meeker, and Hennepin counties will choose between Louis McNutt and Michael Holmstrom Jr. to fill the vacant District 29.

MONTICELLO, MN — Voters in Minnesota Senate District 29 will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4, to choose a new state senator in a special election. The district includes much of Wright County and parts of Hennepin and Meeker counties. The winner will fill a term ending Jan. 4, 2027.
Louis McNutt (Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party)
McNutt, a Buffalo resident and DFL-endorsed candidate, works as a heavy equipment mechanic for the Minnesota Department of Transportation and serves in AFSCME Local 221. A husband and father of three, McNutt’s campaign focuses on giving rural Minnesotans a stronger voice in St. Paul and promoting collaboration across communities.

Michael Holmstrom Jr. (Republican Party)
Holmstrom, a small business owner and lifelong Buffalo resident, is running on a platform of faith, family, and limited government. He and his wife, Nicole, are raising five children. Holmstrom highlights public safety, parental rights in education, and reducing government burdens on families and businesses.

School District Question 1 (ISD #882) — Voters in the Monticello Public Schools district will decide on a funding measure for local operations.

- Election Day: Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025
- Polls Open: 7 a.m.–8 p.m.
- Absentee Voting: Began Sept. 19, 2025
- Write-in Filing Deadline: Oct. 28, 2025
Voting Eligibility
Under Minnesota’s Restore the Vote Act, residents regain voting rights after leaving incarceration. To vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and a Minnesota resident for at least 20 days. Voters can register online or in person on Election Day.
