Driver On I-35 Shot In Leg By Bullet Fired From Over 1,500 Feet Away

Three men are cooperating with investigators after the shooting north of the Twin Cities.

CHISAGO COUNTY, MN — A Duluth man was driving south on Interstate 35 Thursday morning when a bullet ripped through his door and into his leg, investigators said.

The shooting happened around 10:40 a.m. near the Harris, Minnesota exit. A passenger in the car called 911, reporting that the shot appeared to come through the driver’s side door.

Deputies, state troopers, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officers rushed to the area. Responders said they could hear rifle fire nearby. Using drones and searching on foot, they found three men on private property along the interstate, shooting at a target set up toward the highway.

The spot where they were shooting was more than 1,500 feet from where the driver was hit. The men are cooperating with law enforcement.

The 48-year-old victim was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with injuries that were not life-threatening. Three other people in the vehicle were not hurt.
