ACROSS MINNESOTA — There have been 7,171 confirmed "COVID-19 vaccine breakthough" cases in Minnesota, according to numbers released by the state's Department of Health Monday.
A breakthrough case is when someone tests positive for the virus after being fully vaccinated. People who contracted COVID-19 before being vaccinated are not included in the number of breakthrough cases.
Total breakthrough cases
The number of total breakthrough cases is 7,171, or .240 percent of the 2,989,353 Minnesotans who are fully vaccinated, officials said. In other words, over 99.7 of fully vaccinated Minnesotans have not tested positive for COVID-19.

Hospitalization
A total of 584 fully vaccinated residents — or 0.020 percent of the fully vaccinated population — have been hospitalized with COVID.
Deaths
A total of 60 fully vaccinated residents — or 0.002 percent of the fully vaccinated population — have died of complications from the virus, according to state health officials.

"COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases are identified by actively matching Minnesota case records with Minnesota vaccination records," the state Department of Health said.
"All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Case and vaccine totals reflect only the results from laboratory testing and vaccinations that have been reported."
Since the pandemic began, 33,980 Minnesotans have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 7,734 residents have died from complications related to COVID-19.
