How Bad Was The Air In Minnesota? Here's The Cigarette Comparison

Fine particle pollution spiked to record highs across Minnesota during this week's wildfire smoke event.

TWIN CITIES, MN — Air pollution in parts of Minnesota this week briefly reached levels that, if sustained over a full day, would be the health equivalent of smoking more than 20 cigarettes, according to pollution exposure models.

Between June 2 and 4, a thick wave of wildfire smoke swept across the state, pushing fine particle pollution to record-breaking levels.

In Grand Portage, the air hit 476.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of fine particulate matter, the highest wildfire smoke reading ever recorded at a state regulatory monitor, according to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).

Researchers at Berkeley Earth estimate that breathing 22 µg/m³ over 24 hours is about equal in health impact to smoking one cigarette.

That means if Grand Portage’s pollution level of 476 µg/m³ had persisted for 24 hours, it would have been roughly equivalent to smoking 21 cigarettes in a day, according to Berkeley Earth’s air quality model.

St. Cloud, Red Lake Nation, Leech Lake Nation, and Brainerd — all above 400 µg/m³ — suffered similar toxicity.

The MPCA says this was one of the worst wildfire smoke events since it began tracking them in 2013.

The list below shows the top hourly smoke readings in Minnesota history, including more than a dozen cities that reached "very unhealthy" levels this week alone.

(And yes — the highest hourly pollution level ever recorded in Minnesota still belongs to fireworks: a 657 µg/m³ spike in Minneapolis on July 4, 2020.)
