Minnesota Man Blasts Himself In Leg While Unloading Gun: Sheriff

Deputies say the 42-year-old was unloading the weapon on a rural road in Sugar Bush Township when it accidentally discharged.

SUGAR BUSH TOWNSHIP, MN — A 42-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg late Monday night while unloading a firearm, according to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the incident happened around 11:11 p.m. on Oct. 27, when the man, a passenger in a vehicle stopped on Hales Road north of Birchmont Beach Road, got out to unload his gun and it discharged.

The driver called 911 and began driving toward Cass Lake Indian Health Service. Law enforcement and emergency medical services met the vehicle on Mission Road SE, provided care, and transported the man to Sanford Health Bemidji.

The man told deputies the shooting was accidental. He was treated for his injuries.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department and Leech Lake Ambulance Service.
