MINNESOTA — A 39-year-old Cokato mother is facing felony charges of drug possession, storing meth paraphernalia in the presence of a child, and child endangerment after her daughter and another young girl consumed "magic mushroom" chocolate at school, leading to significant impairment, according to a criminal complaint.

On Sept. 10, deputies from the Wright County Sheriff’s Office responded to Cokato Elementary School after staff reported two children showing signs of overdose.

A 6-year-old girl and another young girl were assessed by the school nurse, who determined they began behaving strangely after snack time.

The girls had eaten chocolate that the 6-year-old brought from home.

Staff found packaging labeled “Mmeld Magic Mushroom,” marked for adults only, which contained six grams of psychedelic mushrooms, the complaint states.

The 6-year-old is the daughter of Tauriainen, who did not respond to calls from the school, police said.

Both girls were transported to a hospital for treatment. Investigators said the 6-year-old consumed most of the bar.

Police said a search of Tauriainen’s apartment turned up drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and syringes within reach of children, according to deputies. Items included:

  • A rolled dollar bill with burnt residue in a kitchen drawer
  • Naloxone spray and a glass pipe with burnt residue on a coffee table
  • Syringes with liquid in a nightstand and a dresser
  • A substance consistent with fentanyl in a bedroom nightstand
  • Three glass pipes and 0.59 grams of methamphetamine on a plate under a bed, next to a children’s cup and underwear

The complaint says the drugs and paraphernalia were accessible to a child.

The 6-year-old later told a social worker that she lives alone with her mother, sometimes sleeps in her mother’s bed or closet, and took the chocolate with "slugs" from the refrigerator.

Court records show Tauriainen was recently placed on probation in another case and ordered not to use or possess controlled substances. She is charged with:

  • Fifth-degree drug possession (felony)
  • Storing meth paraphernalia in the presence of a child (felony)
  • Child endangerment (felony)

A warrant has been issued for her arrest.
