WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota was hospitalized Wednesday after feeling unwell while working at the U.S. Capitol, her office said.

After visiting the Capitol physician, Smith was referred to George Washington University Hospital for further evaluation. She was admitted overnight for observation out of an abundance of caution.

"She expects to be back at work very soon," her staff said in a statement. No additional details about her condition were released.

Her absence came just hours before the Senate voted early Thursday to approve $9 billion in federal spending cuts, including major reductions to public broadcasting and foreign aid.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar voted against the bill. Smith also opposed the measure but was unable to cast her vote due to the hospitalization.
