Apple Valley, Eastview Boys Basketball to Battle for Section Championship, Trip to State

Apple Valley and Eastview won their section semifinal games Saturday and will play each other for the section championship; only one team will advance to the state tournament.

It's something a lot of people probably saw coming.

Seeded at the top of section 3AAAA, both the No. 1 and No. 2 boys basketball teams blazed through their quarterfinal and semifinal games, and will meet Friday in the section championship.

As a result, only one of the teams—both of which consistently ranked in the top five in the state throughout the regular season—will earn a state berth.

The teams square off at 7 p.m. Friday at Burnsville High School, where it likely will be a packed house. Eastview is the home team.

In Saturday's semifinals, Apple Valley beat No. 3 Cretin-Derham Hall 87-76. Tyus Jones had 33 points, followed by Dustin Fronk with 29.

Eastview beat No. 4 Eagan 62-43, with 21 from Darin Haugh and 20 from Joey King.

Last year, it was Apple Valley that made the section final, but . South also .

Eastview ended its regular season 25-1 overall and 17-1 in the South Suburban Conference, its sole loss to also 25-1 (17-1) Lakeville North.

Apple Valley's regular season record was 21-5, and 14-4 in conference.
