Police say Ryan Paul McNamara had marijuana in his underwear and prescription drugs in his sock when he was stopped.

An man has been charged with felony drug possession after Minneapolis police say they found a bag of marijuana in his underwear and a prescription muscle relaxant in his sock.

Ryan Paul McNamara, 23, is charged with fifth-degree drug possession, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by Minneapolis Police Officer Charles Nathan, police stopped a car on June 3 in south Minneapolis because it had illegally tinted windows, non-functioning taillights and music playing too loudly.

When they walked toward the car to check the window tint, officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana, and they saw that the front-seat passenger—later identified as McNamara—had his pants pulled down to his thighs, with his underwear completely exposed, according to the complaint.

Police asked McNamara to step out of the car and asked him to hand over the marijuana. McNamara “eventually complied,” retrieving a small bag of marijuana from his underwear, the complaint says.

When police asked McNamara if he had any more drugs, he allegedly removed two pills, later identified as Clonazepam, from his sock, according to the complaint. Clonazepam is a prescription muscle relaxant sold under the brand name Klonopin.

McNamara told police that he had stolen the Clonazepam from his father, who has a prescription for the drug, according to the complaint.

McNamara is free on a $3,000 bond. A hearing in his case is scheduled June 19 in Hennepin County District Court.
