APPLE VALLEY, MN— As more snow is expected to fall around the state, City leaders are reminding residents about the rules for clearing snow and ice.

"Clearing snow and ice from public sidewalks and fire hydrants on your property is essential to the health, safety and welfare of the city, and can promote economic vitality within the city," city leaders wrote Monday.

City ordinance requires that all public sidewalks are cleared of snow and ice within 48 hours of the most recent snow event.

"Clearing snow and ice from public sidewalks can serve many purposes for the community that you might not recognize," code enforcement officials explained. "In addition to preventing unnecessary slips and falls; it can keep school children walking home from the bus stop off of public streets and out of harm’s way. Having sidewalks cleared can promote pedestrian access to nearby commercial amenities supporting local businesses."

"We also ask owners of commercial properties to keep their private sidewalks clear, as they are used regularly by the general public."
