Five Things You Should Know Today: August 12

Just in time for the weekend: Rain's in the forecast.

  1. The National Weather Service is using the word “likely” in its Rosemount forecast when it comes to showers and thunderstorms today. The high will hover around 74, with as much as a half-inch of new rain possible. More showers tonight, with a low around 65.  
  2. Today’s schedule at the Dakota County Jail in Farmington includes an open horse show, 4-H beef steer, market heifer, sheep and fleece and goat judging, a 4-H rabbit agility demonstration, entertainers from the Minnesota Renaissance Festival roaming the fairgrounds, and a free performance by Lost Highway on the Beer Garden stage.   3. The Jazzercise Apple Valley Fitness Center is having a today: New customers can join free and get a month of classes free. For more information, call (952) 210-8557, or check the center’s website.     
  4. A craft fair featuring items created by kids ages 4 through 17 will be held in Rosemount’s Robert Trail Library beginning at 11 a.m. All items are priced at $2 or less.
  5. Today’s a big day in Minnesota history for new inventions. In 1940, a tractor truck made by the Minneapolis-Moline Power Co. got nationwide attention during Army battle maneuvers at Camp Ripley; the vehicle would be dubbed a “jeep” by soldiers. And in 1981, IBM introduced the first personal computer, designed at the company’s plant in Rochester.
