Five Things You Should Know Today: August 18

Second verse, same as the first: Today's weather will be practically a repeat of yesterday's.

  1. The National Weather Service is calling for mostly sunny skies today, with a high near 82 and winds from the south-southwest between 6 and 11 mph. There’s a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, mainly after 1 a.m., with a low around 63 and the chance of picking up a quarter-inch of rain.
  2. The University of Minnesota is hosting an in Rosemount from 4 to 8 p.m. today. The event will highlight agricultural research and innovations at the facility, with exhibits about cows, turkeys, honeybees, monarch butterflies, endangered trees, raptors, horses and 4-H animals. There will be activities for children and adults and free corn on the cob and lemonade for everyone. Admission is free.
  3. It's a good night for music in the south metro: will perform tonight at 8 in the Burnsville Performing Arts Center. Tickets range from $59 to $65 and are available through Ticketmaster. For those with different musical tastes, are on the bill at 7:30 tonight at the Minnesota Zoo amphitheater in Apple Valley. Tickets are $39; you can get those through Ticketmaster, too.
  4. A on adding native plants to your yard begins tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Spring Lake Park Reserve in Rosemount. Participants will learn how to prepare a yard for a prairie installation and get tips on choosing the right seed mix. The fee is $15, and pre-registration is required.
  5. Today is national Bad Poetry Day. It’s also the day in 1986 when Howard Stern’s radio show premiered on WYSP-FM in Philadelphia, and the day in 1972 when Paul and Linda McCartney were fined 800 pounds in Sweden for possession of marijuana. Surely those events are worthy of some bad poetry.
