Five Things You Should Know Today: August 26

If you're heading for the state fair today, the weather should continue to be cooperative.

  1. In spite of a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, the National Weather Service is predicting partly sunny skies, with a high near 82, and calm winds becoming light and from the south-southwest. Skies will be partly cloudy tonight, with a low around 58 and light winds shifting to the northwest.
  2. Highlights of today’s Minnesota State Fair schedule: a grandstand performance by Def Leppard and Heart (tickets still available at Ticketmaster or at the grandstand box office); demonstrations for Governor’s Fire Prevention Day all day in Carousel Park; and a free performance in the Leinie Lodge Bandshell at 8:30 p.m. by Minnesota’s own Morris Day and the Time. And do not miss the Great Sing-Along up on Machinery Hill. WICKED fun.
  3. A will be offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. today at the Heritage Library in Lakeville. The class, which will include the scoop on web browsers, search engines and toolbars – is free and open to everyone.
  4. Head for Burnsville today and the at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. The sale takes up two buildings and six tents; the church describes it as a “garage sale on steroids.” Hours are 2 to 8 p.m.
  5. Today is National Cherry Popsicle Day. I can’t imagine anyone who would have a problem with that (except maybe for those weird fans of banana Popsicles – both of them).
