Five Things You Should Know Today: August 3

The word "rain" does not appear anywhere in today's forecast for Rosemount. No, really.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting sunny skies today, with a high near 83, and calm winds. And for tonight: partly cloudy, with a low around 64. Give your air conditioner the day off.
  2. It should be a beautiful evening for an outdoor concert. Head over to the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley for a performance by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $49.25 and are available through Ticketmaster.
  3. , 2011 graduates of Rosemount High School, were honored this week by the Rosemount City Council for earning the Girl Scouts’ Gold Award. Peloquin organized a project to educate teens about hunger in the community, and Sable’s project was creating an eco-friendly way of controlling mosquitoes in local parks.
  4. Minnesota Energy Resources is accepting proposals from community groups for its recently created “It’s Worth the Energy” grant, worth up to $3,000. Organizations can submit proposals for projects that improve the community in one of three areas: environment, community or human services. The deadline for submissions is Aug. 12. For more information or to submit a proposal, visit the company’s website
  5. And today is National Watermelon Day. Mmm, watermelon. (Do you put salt on your watermelon? Or is that a regional thing?)
