Five Things You Should Know Today: August 30
Our string of ideal state fair days may be over: Today's forecast calls for a strong possibility of rain.

- There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, mainly after 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The high will be around 78, with partly sunny skies and mostly calm winds. The chance of showers drops to 20 percent tonight, with a low around 62 and light winds from the south and southeast.
- Today is Military Appreciation Day at the Minnesota State Fair, with a dedication at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Garden and military booths and activities on West Dan Patch Avenue. Tonight’s grandstand concert, kicking off at 7:30 p.m., is by Steely Dan. Tickets are still available at the grandstand box office or through Ticketmaster.
- An students is scheduled from 7 to 9:30 tonight. Students will report to their homerooms and get ready for the upcoming school year.
- It’s also back-to-school kickoff day at Rosemount Middle School, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. All students will have their photos taken.
- Today is National Toasted Marshmallow Day, which seems odd at the end of August. But if you insist on celebrating, the s’mores booth at the state fair has you covered. (There’s no harm in adding some chocolate and graham crackers to your observance.)
