  4. On this day in 1829, Lt. Col. Zachary Taylor ended his command at Fort Snelling, which had begun a little more than a year earlier. He later led the U.S. Army in the war against Mexico, and would become president in 1849 – the only U.S. president to have spent a significant amount of time in Minnesota.
