Five Things You Should Know Today: July 15

Today's the 60th birthday of one of Minnesota's most memorable politicians. Guess who?

  1. The National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, under mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 86. We could pick up another quarter-inch to half-inch of rain.
  2. Can’t get enough of that Harry Potter fellow? Check out the last movie in the series, in IMAX 3D at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley today. Showtimes are 12:15, 3:15, 6:15, 9:15 and 11:59 p.m. today. Buy tickets here.
  3. Wish our former governor a happy birthday: Jesse Ventura turns 60 today. Ventura was born James Janos in Minneapolis, but he adopted the more snazzy Ventura when he launched his professional wrestling career. His latest gig: host of “Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura” on truTV
  4. On this day in 1917, Fred Brown of Melrose killed a wolf with his bare hands. While walking to Ward Springs, Brown came across a wolf hunting frogs. Brown – who apparently forgot that he had a hunting knife in his pocket – grabbed the wolf by its tail and wrestled with it until he broke open its head. When five or six other wolves approached, Brown drew his knife, but the wolves apparently thought better of it and backed off. (Sounds like an urban legend, but the Minnesota Historical Society swears it’s true.)
  5. Today is both National Tapioca Pudding Day and Respect Canada Day. Celebrate by having a big bowl of tapioca while singing “O Canada.” But please don't sing with your mouth full.
