Five Things You Should Know Today: July 19

More heat, more rain and another insanely high heat index are on tap.

  1. There’s a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, according to the National Weather Service, which is also predicting partly sunny skies and a high near 94. Head index values will be as high as 109, and we could pick up another quarter-inch of rain or more. 
  2. The will go on, rain or shine, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today in the parking lot of the Rosemount Community Center, 13885 Robert Trail S.
  3. If you’d rather stay indoors, check out a by the Splatter Sisters, who will use verse and song to present 30 children’s books in 30 minutes from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Rosemount’s .
  4. The Rosemount City Council meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. On the agenda: a request to approve a final plat and a building plan for Prestwick Place 2nd Addition. Council members also will be updated on plans for this year’s , scheduled July 22-31.   
  5. And today is Flitch Day. This observance grew out of a 15th century English custom in which monks offered a “flitch” of bacon – roughly half a pig – as a prize for any married couple who could prove to a jury of bachelors and maidens that they had lived together in harmony and fidelity for the past year. (Apparently, very few brought home the bacon.)
