Five Things You Should Know Today: July 20

We're not even going to joke about it anymore. Stay inside today if you can, and drink plenty of water.

  1. Another sunny, hot day is on tap, according to the National Weather Service, with a high near 94 and heat index values as high as 112. Winds will be from the southwest from 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as strong as 26 mph, and tonight will stay uncomfortably warm, with a low around 70.
  2. The Rosemount Youth Commission will meet at 1 p.m. today in the City Hall conference room. The agenda includes a discussion of plans for a youth rally and reports from commission members.
  3. Twin Cities authors will visit the Dakota County Library in Apple Valley at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss the second book in their zoologist mystery series, “Killer Instinct.” The duo’s first book, “Death Roll,” was released in 2008. Admission is free – and the library is air-conditioned.
  4. The Rosemount chapter of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, an organization that honors and supports returning military veterans, is looking for volunteers to help with events during – which begins Friday – and also the Dakota County Fair Aug. 8-14 and a re-integration picnic. Contact Rae Hedstrom if you can help.
  5. And today is Moon Day – the anniversary of man’s first moon landing. Apollo 11 left the Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969, and the Eagle lunar module landed on the moon four days later. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent more than two hours that day walking on the moon’s surface.
