Five Things You Should Know Today: September 1

It's September! Welcome back, summer! Wait …

  1. Keep the water handy today: The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 91 today, with mostly sunny skies and winds from the south and southeast between 8 and 17 mph. There’s a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, mainly after 1 a.m., with a low around 71.
  2. Today is Seniors Day at the Minnesota State Fair, with discounted admission for seniors. Tonight’s grandstand show is “An Evening with Marc Anthony” (something Jennifer Lopez isn’t all that interested in these days); tickets are available at the grandstand box office or through Ticketmaster. Click here for a full schedule for the day. And take heed: “Barns close for the day at 2 p.m. to make way for new animals arriving tomorrow. Cattle, goats, sheep and swine depart.”
  3. It’s at the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul, with music tonight by the Moonlight Serenaders. Swing-dance lessons begin at 6:15 p.m., with live music from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $7.
  4. Today is staff development day, and also school visitation day at Rosemount Middle School. Students can visit between 3 and 7 p.m.
  5. And September is National Papaya Month, National Chicken Month, Better Breakfast Month and National Honey Month. Now you know.
