Five Things You Should Know Today: September 6

It will be a picture-perfect first day of school for students in Rosemount.

  1. Skies will be mostly clear today, with a high near 72 and calm winds, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight’s low will dip to 50, with more light southerly winds.
  2. It’s the first day of school for most of Minnesota, including students in Rosemount. Just in case you want to start counting the days, the last day of school is June 8 – just nine months. Hang in there, students.
  3. The Rosemount City Council meets at 7:30 tonight in Rosemount City Hall. On the agenda: adoption of the city’s preliminary 2012 budget and tax levies, and setting a public hearing date on the budget and levies. Police officer oaths of office will be administered, and the council will publicly recognize newly promoted Eagle Scouts.
  4. Dakota County libraries in Apple Valley and Lakeville will host introductions to the library and its services for homeschooling families today. The Apple Valley session will run from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Galaxie meeting room, and the Lakeville session from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Heritage meeting room. For more information, click here
  5. On this day in 1877, the Minnesota chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was formed. To commemorate the day, feel free to abstain from alcohol, but don’t go around with a hatchet busting up saloons, as some of those WCTU ladies were wont to do.
