An Apple Valley man has been charged with criminal sexual conduct after authorities say he had inappropriate sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl in Rosemount.
Donzell Antoine Varnado, 35, who lives in the 6500 block of 158th Street West, faces a gross misdemeanor count of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.
According to the criminal complaint, Rosemount police were called to a home on March 8 on a report of criminal sexual conduct involving a 13-year-old victim.

Officers met with the victim and her aunt. The victim told police that Varnado, a family friend, had tried to have sexual intercourse with her in late February.
According to the complaint, the victim came home that evening and found the defendant there, watching television. The victim said she asked Varnado for a back rub because she had hurt her back playing basketball over the weekend.

Varnado agreed, and during the course of the back rub, he pulled down the victim’s pants and underwear and his own pants and touched the girl inappropriately, according to the complaint.
The victim said she pretended to be asleep during the contact, and eventually Varnado stopped after he was unsuccessful in his attempt to have sex with her.
Varnado is scheduled to make a first appearance on the charge July 18 in Dakota County District Court in Hastings.
