Residents of Apple Valley and other south metro cities gathered for a chilly dip, dressed as Vikings, pirates and even Dorothy and Toto during the South Metro Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser.

Hundreds of people crowded around Crystal Lake in Burnsville to watch their friends and neighbors brave the icy waters during Saturday's South Metro Polar Bear Plunge, an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics Minnesota.

The AVaires dance team and employees from were among the groups that participated.

Event coordinator Megan Lewis said 940 people registered to take a one-time dip for charity into the chilly water, raising $200,000 at the south metro event alone.
