There are new ways to enjoy the outdoors in Dakota County following major improvements to Lake Byllesby Regional Park in Cannon Falls and Whitetail Woods Regional Park in Farmington. The parks saw camping, trail and children's play area upgrades, among other upgrades over the past year.

The public is invited to explore the improved parks during two free open houses:
Lake Byllesby Regional Park
Saturday, Sept. 25, 3–7 p.m.8150 295th St. E., Cannon Falls

What's changed: Lake Byllesby Campground has expanded from 57 sites to 83, all with paved parking, more privacy and improved accessibility. A canoe launch will give visitors a new way to enjoy the Cannon River. A paved trail connects the campground and Echo Point, which offers sunset views over Lake Byllesby. A new traditional playground, a nature play area and a splash pad are popular with children.
Open house activities: Staff will offer tours of the park and activities in the new nature play area near Lake Byllesby Beach. Enjoy a self-guided walk or bike ride along the new paved lakeside trail with interpretive spots out to Echo Point. Live music by the Northerly Gales will be from 5–7 p.m.
Whitetail Woods Regional Park
Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2–6 p.m.17100 Station Trail, Farmington
What's changed: Two new prairie-style camper cabins are open for year-round reservations. A new paved loop around Empire Lake and three miles of new ski and hiking trails offer exciting ways to experience this park. Families will enjoy the expanded Fawn Crossing Nature Play Area that includes more climbing structures, a scenic overlook deck and more picnic areas.
Open house activities: Get a look inside the park's camper cabins, enjoy Fawn Crossing or take a self-guided walk or bike ride along the new paved loop with interpretive stops around Empire Lake. Food trucks and live music are planned from 4–6 p.m.
