📰 News we're reading

1. Habitat will seek to buy, fix, reoccupy homes (hometownsource.com) — Burnsville is partnering with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity to buy, rehab, and resell substandard homes to income-qualified families, starting with one house a year in 2026 and 2027. Backed by $500,000 in city affordable housing aid, the effort targets properties under about $300,000, including candidates in the Vista View area north of Burnsville Parkway.

2. Graduation, school names, facilities made news in District 191 (hometownsource.com) — Burnsville-area families saw big changes in District 191 this year, from renaming several Burnsville elementary schools and shifting Burnsville High School graduation to St. Thomas after safety concerns, to a rejected townhome plan on the former Sioux Trail site. The district also tackled chronic absenteeism, weighed major facility upgrades, and filled a School Board vacancy with Burnsville resident Tyler Sachse.

3. Rodent, Bird Contamination Prompts Recall Affecting Twin Cities Grocery Stores (patch.com) — Burnsville shoppers should know that Cliff Halal Market and Halal Foods LLC are among Twin Cities stores affected by a major recall tied to rodent and bird contamination at a Minneapolis distributor. The recall covers a wide range of shelf-stable foods, drugs, cosmetics, supplements, and pet foods, and residents are urged to destroy affected products and seek refunds rather than returning items to the company.

4. 2025 in review: News takes place on and off the field (hometownsource.com) — Burnsville athletes and teams had a strong presence in this year’s Dakota County sports highlights, from Buck Hill’s legendary ski coach Erich Sailer to Burnsville junior runner Carley LaMotte’s standout state finishes. The roundup also notes Burnsville’s girls flag football squad reaching a Vikings-sponsored state tournament, alongside big achievements by neighboring Lakeville, Eagan, Rosemount, Farmington, and Apple Valley programs.

5. Stillwater man sentenced for sexually assaulting vulnerable adult (postbulletin.com) — A vulnerable adult was reportedly picked up from a Burnsville group home and taken on a multi-city trip before being sexually assaulted in Rochester in 2021. A Stillwater man has now received probation and a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to a felony charge in the case.
