Volunteer to Boost Recycling, Get in Free to Dakota County Fair

Coordinators for the annual county fair are still looking for volunteers.

Dakota County officials are asking residents for help with an initiative to recycle more waste at this year’s county fair in Farmington

They issued an alert Monday soliciting volunteers to work at various stations throughout this month's Dakota County Fair, where they will advise attendees on what can and cannot be recycled, as well as explain why recycling is crucial to long-term sustainability. The fair will be held Aug. 8-14.

For the third consecutive year, event coordinators will be composting organic materials such as food scraps and soiled paper.

"Dakota County has taken steps to improve education efforts in 2016 to keep organic materials out of the landfill," the alert said, noting that discards for composting will be taken to an area facility.

The fair features carnival rides, food, games, music, contests, raffles, 4-H shows and more.

Volunteers do not need experience to participate in the recycling initiative. They will receive training, a T-shirt and free admission to the fair on the days of their shifts.
