1 Killed After Car Crashes In Eagan Resident's Backyard

Alcohol is suspected in the Tuesday morning crash in Eagan that killed one person.

EAGAN, MN — Alcohol is suspected in a single-car crash that injured the driver and killed a passenger in Eagan early Tuesday morning. Just before 2:30 a.m., Eagan police responded to the scene on the 4400 block of Slater Road.

A 911 caller said a car crashed in her backyard and was smoking. Officers found one man inside the car and another "a short distance away."

The front-right passenger, identified as 43-year-old Michael William Renlund, was found dead inside the car.

The driver was transported to Regions hospital with a police escort. Police suspect him of being under the influence of alcohol.

A warrant was obtained for a blood draw from the driver, and he remains at Regions Hospital, receiving treatment for his injuries.

No other vehicles or people were involved in the crash, according to a news release.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting the investigation and will be conducting crash reconstruction to determine what events took place leading up to the crash.
