Bloodmobile Looking To Refuel At Spring Fling

Up to 20 percent of blood donations come from high school and college blood drives during the academic year.

The American Red Cross (ARC) is one of several public and private entities involved in Eagan's Diffley Square Spring Fling on June 3 and, as it turns out, the event comes at a crucial time for the organization.

A common cycle occurs within blood donation that sees individuals—due to vacations, summer activities and school completion—donate less and less as summer progresses.  The decline in donations can lead to blood stocks that are critically low.

"Up to 20 percent of blood donations come from high school and college blood drives during the academic year. But the need for blood is constant and eligible donors of all blood types are needed," explained ARC spokesperson Sue Gonsior.

"Blood is a perishable product. Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days and platelets just 5 days, so they must be replenished constantly. Under normal circumstances, approximately every 2 seconds someone in America needs a blood transfusion," Gonsior added.

ARC is encouraging donors this summer to take part in the Good to Give. Good to Go promotion—a sweepstakes that offers donors (age 21 and older) a chance to win a trip for four to Orlando, Fla.

According to Gonsior, donors who are unable to attend tomorrow's Diffley Spring Fling can make a blood donation appointment online or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

Other highlights offered at the Spring Fling include: a) live music from The Canvas Tattoo; b) face painting from School; c) a lemonade stand courtesy of ; and d) wine tasting from Diffley Liquors.

The Diffley Spring Fling is being held on June 3 from noon to 6 p.m. at Diffley Square.
