Witnesses told investigators that they saw a man, later identified as Ahmed, leaving the site of the crash and running toward Twin Cities Premium Outlets, police said. Ahmed was apprehended within minutes, according to officials.
Officers responded to the gas station and found Abukar lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head, police said. A cartridge casing labeled “GFL 9mm Luger” was also found nearby, according to officials.
Abukar was transported to the hospital where he died of his injuries, according to the news release.
A witness told investigators that he and Abukar drove to the gas station to meet some people, and when they arrived at the gas station, the people Abukar was meeting pulled up in a sedan, officials said.
The witness said the people Abukar was meeting got into the witness' car and sat in the backseat, police said. The witness and one of the people in the backseat got into an argument about how far back the witness' seat was, according to investigators.
They got out of the witness' car and fought in between the two cars, according to officials. The witness said the man he was arguing with punched him in the face and threw him to the ground, police said.
The witness said that the driver of the sedan got out of the car and shot Abukar and the witness ran away, police said. The witness said he looked back and saw the driver pointing a gun at him, so he kept running and went into a nearby restaurant, according to officials.
The witness said he then saw the driver and a passenger get into the sedan and drive away to another parking lot and eventually crashing nearby, police said. More witnesses told investigators that they saw the driver get out of the car holding a gun, according to officials. The driver, identified as Ahmed, was apprehended shortly after.
When officers apprehended Ahmed, they saw his gun was labelled "GFL 9mm Luger," according to police.
"Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Faisal Abukar for their great
loss," Keena said. She also thanked Eagan Police Department, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner for their roles in the investigation.
