CAPITOL REVIEW: Abortion, Autism And Leo's Law

As the legislative session wraps up, many bills are off to their second and third readings, while others are being passed in the legislature and vetoed in the governor's office.

Here is what your legislators have been doing recently:

Sen. Ted Daley (R-District 38) of Eagan

Senator Daley was elected in 2010 and is serving his first term in office. He is the vice chair of the State Government Innovations and Veterans Committee and he serves on the committees for Education and Job and Economic Growth.

Authored a bill relating to active military service (SF0395)

Effective July 1, military personnel serving active duty overseas will have their driver's license expiration date extended. The bill was passed 63-0 in the Senate and 133-0 in the House of Representatives. Governor Mark Dayton approved the action on May 24. 

Co-authored a bill relating to 'Leo's Law' (SF0361)

Effective Aug. 1, the third full week of Sept. has been deemed "Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week" in Minnesota. The bill was passed 66-0 in the Senate and 129-1 in the House of Representatives. Governor Dayton approved the action on May 27.  

Rep. Doug Wardlow (R-District 38B) of Eagan

Representative Wardlow was elected in 2010 and is serving his first term in office. He serves on the committees for Civil Law; Judiciary Policy and Finance; Property and Local Tax Division; and Taxes.

Co-authored a bill relating to energy (HF0072)

The bill modifies the current ban on carbon dioxide emissions from utilities. After much debate the bill was passed 44-22 in the Senate and 75-54 in the House. Governor Dayton vetoed the bill on May 27.

Co-authored a bill relating to autism (HF0745)

The bill creates the Autism Spectrum Disorder Task Force. It provides appointments and develops a statewide autism strategic plan. The bill was passed 131-1 in the House on May 21 and was introduced in the Senate on May 22.  

Co-authored a bill relating to abortion (HF0936)

The bill prohibits abortions at or after 20 weeks post-fertilization unless the situation meets a specific exception. The bill was passed 84-48 in the House and 41-20 in the Senate. Governor Dayton vetoed the bill on May 25.   

State. Rep. Diane Anderson (R-District 38A) of Eagan

Representative Anderson was elected in 2010 and is serving her first term in office. She serves on the committees for Commerce and Regulatory Reform; Health and Human Services Finance; and Judiciary Policy and Finance.

Co-authored a bill relating to abortion (HF0201)

The bill limits funding for abortions performed through state-sponsored programs. The bill passed 84-48 in the House on May 19 and passed 40-26 in the Senate on May 20. Governor Dayton subsequently vetoed the bill on May 25.

Co-authored a bill relating to human services (HF1339)

The bill creates a My Life, My Choices task force which will examine and develop a system of supports and services for people with disabilities. The bill passed 63-0 in the Senate on May 20 and was received by the House on May 21. The companion bills were found to have discrepancies and the House version was postponed indefinitely on May 21.
