ST. PAUL, MN —The Minnesota Senate on Monday passed legislation —with unanimous support —allowing the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Independent School District 191 to have more flexibility with the funds it receives from property, according to the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus.

The legislation was authored by State Sen. Zach Duckworth (R-Lakeville) and relates to funds "received by the district in connection with a lease of real property." According to the legislation, after paying any related debts, the funds can be deposited into the district's general fund.

Duckworth said money in the district's general fund can be used on student initiatives such as early learning literacy.

"The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board and Superintendent asked for help, and I was happy to work in partnership with them and a group of bipartisan legislators in the House and Senate," Duckworth said in a statement. "This legislation is a priority for their district and will help them best serve the kids and families of their schools. After first paying off any debt, the bill will allow for funds to go toward important school programming, specifically valuable literacy initiatives."

Duckworth continued: "Allowing ISD 191 to have much-needed flexibility will directly benefit students and will also allow the district to focus on getting our kids the help and resources they need after two years of unique challenges."
