What do you believe is the most pressing issue facing 2nd District voters today?
While inflation has come down, Minnesotans are still facing high costs at the grocery store and for everyday items – and I know that the government has a critical role to continue to bring down those costs.
What specific actions will you take to address this issue, if reelected?
In Congress, I’m working to put together a task force that will investigate the price gouging and corporate behavior that has seen record profits and increased prices for American families. The task force will also require big corporations to be transparent about why they’re raising prices on Minnesotans and identify concrete ways to lower costs.
I also wrote the bill to get rid of federal taxes on Social Security to make sure that Minnesota seniors have more money in their pockets due to the double-taxation they now face.
In addition, health care still costs too much. I capped the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare last session and am now working to extend tax credits for health insurance and create more competition with more generic drugs on the market.
There’s still so much more to do to build an economy that makes things easier for middle-class Minnesotans – and I’ll keep focused on finding ways to make that happen.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
Since I’ve been in Congress, I’ve made it a priority to work with anyone to get things done for Minnesotans – and stand up to anyone who doesn’t have the best interests of my constituents at heart. That’s why I voted against the Biden Administration 30% of the time last year and took them on directly to secure the border and fight for the family farmers living in my district.
I’m proud to be ranked in the top 3% most bipartisan Members of Congress and as the 6th most independent member of my own party.
You deserve to be represented by a leader that will put you and your family – not a party or an administration – first. That’s what I’ve always done – and that’s what I promise to do as long as I’m in this seat.
What is one thing you love about the 2nd District?
I love the fact that it is one of the most evenly divided congressional districts in the county. It forces you to listen to everyone and to figure out how to get to a compromise with my colleagues across the aisle. The people here are hard-working, fair-minded and the majority want us to bring this country back to the center.
Together, we’ve held town halls, worked to bring home federal investments for local infrastructure and law enforcement and visited small businesses like Wildcats and Charlie’s. Your ideas and hopes for our district continue to inspire my work– and it’s an honor to represent you in Congress.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
Like many Minnesotans, I am deeply concerned about the fentanyl crisis and what’s happening with our southern border. Earlier this year, my bipartisan END FENTANYL Act was signed into law, and I was able to push the President to act to limit border crossings. But I’ve been to the border myself and I know there’s a lot more to do.
We’ve got to work together – and work quickly – to ensure order and safety at the border and protect Minnesotans. That’s what I’ll continue to push for in Congress.
Finally, please know that I am doing everything in my power to fully protect and restore reproductive freedom in this country. I’ve voted to codify abortion rights into law twice and I’m working on legislation to protect Minnesotans’ access to IVF and birth control – because I believe politics should have no role in your personal, private health care decisions. We value our freedoms in this district.
