MN Vikings Consider Signing Aaron Rodgers: Report

Aaron Rodgers has already followed Brett Favre's career path to an almost eerie degree.

EAGAN, MN — The Minnesota Vikings are considering signing 41-year-old free-agent QB Aaron Rodgers, according to at least one report.

The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini posted on X Wednesday that "Vikings decision-makers are still evaluating their options at quarterback, including the possibility of signing Aaron Rodgers."

"The four-time MVP is intrigued by the idea of playing in Minnesota," Russini added. "For now, it’s a waiting game."

ESPN reporter Kevin Seifert also added to the speculation.

Rodgers has followed Brett Favre’s career path to an almost eerie degree. After being pushed out of Green Bay to make way for rising QB Jordan Love, Rodgers signed with the New York Jets—just as Favre did years earlier to clear the stage for Rodgers.

Favre’s journey didn’t end there, though; after his stint with the Jets, he landed in Minnesota and — at age 39 — delivered a career season while leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship.

Could history be on the verge of repeating itself?

During a recent appearance on The Will Cain Show on Fox News, Favre actually encouraged Rodgers to consider joining the Vikings, calling Minnesota "a really good football team."

He praised the team as being "loaded at pretty much every position" and highlighted their "tremendous fanbase."

The Vikings have QB JJ McCarthy, who is entering his second season in Minnesota after being drafted 10th overall in 2024.

McCarthy’s rookie year was derailed by an injury that sidelined him in the preseason, paving the way for journeyman QB Sam Darnold to take over.

In a surprising turn, Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-3 season, but the team fell short in the first round of the playoffs against the Los Angeles Rams. Now a free agent, Darnold recently signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

It remains uncertain whether the Vikings are ready to commit to JJ McCarthy as their QB1, as questions linger about his experience and durability following last season’s injury.

But Rodgers enters the offseason with lingering questions about his own abilities. After recovering from an Achilles injury that kept him out for nearly the entire previous season, he returned as the Jets' starter in 2024, playing all 17 games.

Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, finishing with a 90.5 passer rating. His return didn’t translate to team success, as the Jets stumbled to a 5-12 record.
