This quote is from March 13th, 2022, by Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the Vikings general manager, on the contractual extension of Kirk Cousins:

The “high-level quarterback play” for Cousins mentioned by Adofo-Mensah was the seventh-best in the NFL per a mixture of Pro Football Focus, QBR, and passer rating. Although, Deshaun Watson didn’t play in 2021 and Lamar Jackson had a down year, so Cousins usually teeters on the 10th or 11th-best spot statistically.

The Vikings new leadership regime believes it can win with Cousins at a $35 million per-season price tag. Plain and simple. When the ownership started the cycle of structural change in early January, it opined the team would be competitive in 2022 and that a rebuild was not afoot.

Inking Cousins for an extra season confirms the truth-telling acumen of Mark Wilf.

Cousins is the Vikings guy on an extension that eases cap pain. Minnesota will not start the Kevin O’Connell era with the guaranteed futility a rebuild would mandate.
