Same-Day Driver's License Cards Offered In Lakeville, Moorhead

LAKEVILLE, MN — Many if not most Minnesotans know the feeling of dread when they lose their wallet or purse and have to go through the pain of applying for a new driver's license. But that process may become easier in the near future.

The state is piloting a service that offers same-day class D driver's license cards.

The same-day service is now available at the Dakota County License Center in Lakeville and at the Clay County Department of Motor Vehicles in Moorhead.

Same-day service is available for people who apply for, renew or replace a standard class D driver's license, permit, or identification card. And there's no added fee to receive a same-day issued card.

However — due to the printing process — the same-day issued cards are less flexible, officials said.

The program, which was authorized by the Minnesota Legislature, started Tuesday and runs through June of 2023.

Same-day cards are not available at other driver's license offices or exam stations.

These cards are not available for same-day service:

• REAL ID compliant driver's licenses, permits or IDs
• Enhanced driver's licenses, permits or IDs
• Commercial driver's licenses or permits

"This pilot program meets the needs of Minnesotans who would require a same-day card," said DVS Director Pong Xiong in a news release. "We are happy to provide this efficient, innovative service to fulfill our customer's expectations."
