U.S. News Releases 'Best High Schools': Where Does Eagan Rank?

The annual ranking released by U.S. News and World Report evaluates schools based on graduation rates, academic performance, and more.

MINNESOTA — Eagan Senior High School ranks no. 8 in the state, and No. 525 nationally, according to a new study by U.S. News and World Report.

This year's list of best high schools list evaluated more than 17,800 schools nationwide.

The rankings of best high schools are intended to show how well the nation's public schools serve all students, regardless of achievement level, by teaching them basic skills and preparing them for college-level work, according to a news release from U.S. News.

Families can also use the rankings to see how schools compare at the national, state, and local levels on factors such as graduation rates and college readiness.

No Minnesota schools cracked U.S. News' Top 100, but Woodbury's Math and Science Academy made it to No. 137 nationally.

Nova Classical Academy Upper School and Eagle Ridge Academy Charter School also made the top 200.

Here are the local and national placements for the top 100 Minnesota schools ranked by the magazine:


In general, the highest-ranked schools had students who performed well on state assessments for math, reading, and science, U.S. News said. They also performed strongly in meeting the needs of underserved students, including those who are Black, Hispanic, or from low-income households.

The schools had a breadth of curriculum offerings and high graduation rates, and their students performed well on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

U.S. News said eleven of the top 20 ranked schools were charter or magnet schools.

In national rankings, the top five schools are, respectively: The Early College at Guilford, Greensboro, North Carolina; Signature School at Evansville, Indiana; The School for Advanced Studies in Miami; The Davidson Academy of Nevada at Reno; and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at Alexandria, Virginia.
