During the summer months it is common to see algae forming in lakes and ponds. Most algae are harmless and important parts of aquatic ecosystems. However, when temperatures climb, conditions are ripe for blue-green algae to produce Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), some of which can be harmful to pets and people. HABs thrive in shallow, warm, nutrient rich water and aren’t always easily recognized. To be safe, it is best to use this rule of thumb: When in doubt, stay out!
