Over-Capacity Chaos: Eden Prairie AAU Tourney Abruptly Shut Down

AAU tournament crowds got out of hand Saturday, forcing police to cancel the event, officials said.

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN — An AAU basketball tournament at Eden Prairie High School was abruptly shut down Saturday evening after the event drew an over-capacity crowd and several minor scuffles broke out, officials said.

Eden Prairie police were called at about 5:49 p.m. to help disperse the crowd at the Prep Hoops North Battle at the Lakes tournament. Though there were some altercations, no serious fights or injuries were reported, and no arrests were made, according to police.

Eden Prairie Schools said the event’s organizer, Prep Hoops North, failed to follow key terms of their rental agreement, including attendee behavior management and capacity limits set by the Eden Prairie Fire Department.

"Prep Hoops North rented space at Eden Prairie High School following our district’s normal rental process," the district said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, they did not follow our rental agreement, including managing attendee behavior, and capacity exceeded what was allowed by the Eden Prairie Fire Department. When we became aware of this situation, we collaborated with the Eden Prairie Police Department to secure the facility and end the event to ensure the safety of all attendees."
